THE SUN-DAPPLED FORESTS of the mountains will attract thousands of tourists to see the colorful leaves this month. Some estimates are that the coming weekend of the 18th will be better since the first frost came just last weekend. The largest crowds of sight-seers normally come at the middle of the month, although motels and restaurants are rushed throughout October (Staff photo) Full Color On Parkway Fronds Approaching Peak Fall color along the famed Blue ridge Parkway is ap proaching its peak according to Superintendent Granville B. Liles. While this year it won’t be as colorful as in the past due to lack of moisture, nonethe less the annual autumn show will still be a good one. In North Carolina, color is just beginning to show at the lower elevations. The reds of dogwood, blackgum, and sour Show At Wilkes Co. Parkway rangers predict the overall color peak will occur during this weekend. In Virginia, the situation is saneh the same. The lack of normal rainfall1 has caused some leaves to dry up and fall before coloring appears. The peak of fall color is ex pected to occur during the period October 10 to 20. Places along the Parkway in Virginia that are expecially pretty this fall include the area between Mileposts 5 and 45, the Peaks of Otter, and near Smart View to Mabry Mill. All Parkway campgrounds and picnic areas will remain open through the month of Octo ber, alsc all concession oper ations. Travel along the Parkway reaches a crescendo at this time of year, and Liles urged that visits be made during week days thus avoiding the heavy travel on weekends. CandidatesToAppear With County Teachers Three local candidates for the Legislature will appear Tuesday, Oct. 15, before a joint meeting of the Watauga County units of the North Carolina Edu cation Association and the Classroom Teachers Associ ation. Bryan an op portunity to express their views on the legislative program of the United Forces for Educa tion and answer questions from the audience. The program of the U. F. £. includes: —Salary increases for school personnel which will make the state more competitive in re cruiting and holding good teach ers, improve teacher morale, lengthen employment period of teachers for in-service train ing and allow them to receive fringe benefits as do other state employees. —Summer programs which will be a first step toward full year kindergartens, prepare youths for jobs, spur the gift ed child and help the slow to catch up. —Additional personnel to al low teachers to teach more ef fectively, to place special per sonnel where they most are needed, to reduce the class load of teachers and to provide help for ever-growing clerical tasks. Dr. Francis M. Rich, chair man of the Political Science Department, Appalachian State University, will moderate the program. <«!****»*» OK After another year of striving for a more perfect Volkswagen, we bring you the only visible results. Four nice new shades. Of course, some people won't be ter ribly impressed. The way they see it, we let year after year go by without ever really trying to im prove our appearance. Never a bug with dramatic new tail fins. Never a bug with a revolutionary new Well, making sensational outside changes just isn’t like us. Right from the start we’ve believed in unsensational in side changes. Take this year's bug. Nice though all its 13 improvements are, there's not a one you can exactly call the stuff of high drama. Certainly not the pew 'night-and-day1 *'• inside mirror. Or the better kind of weather stripping between the engine cover and the body. Or the new electric rear window de fogger. Or even the new ignition lock that com bines with the steering wheel lock. Over the years, the result of our striving has mostly been little things. 2218 little things to be exact. But it’s the little things that make for perfection. And perfection is no little thing. ^/fr///g^MOTQRS.Inc, AK U Smith Pcnl>r St _HlvVnni M f 'O' 1234 Sooth Center St. — Hickory, N. C.
